The Bold & The Beautiful
As I looked through a handful of weddings I had this pastyear, two words came to mind: BOLD & BEAUTIFUL! “Bold” representing the rich colors and “Beautiful”representing the gorgeous brides! Weddings this year had me touring all of Indiana ranging from theChicago “Region” all the way down to Evansville and the Ohio River.

This first picture "officially" kicked off 2011 as it was taken during the countdown on New Years.

Seniors are at such an exciting stage of life! This past year two of my sessions were with old students of mine from when they were in sixth grade. Wow! How they've grown!!! Gone are the days of them crawling around under desks (don't ask) and getting on my nerves - intentionally I may add. =) It truly is a blessing to have been able to watch them grow over the years and to have the honor of capturing them at such an enthusiastic time in life.

NFL HALL OF FAME Induction Ceremonies

This year the NFL Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was exciting to me cause of the induction of Richard Dent, DE for the 1985 Chicago Bears! I grew up wanting to be like him since that was the same position I played in high school. I was like a kid in a candy store excited to see him and a few teammates in person. When I saw the owner, Virginia McCaskey - owner of Da Bears and daughter of Papa Bear George Halas, I couldn't resist meeting her. A fragile aged woman, she shined Bears pride and has a heck of a grip! I introduced myself and told her how I grew up hoping to play for her some day. When she looked at my camera around my neck, I admitted to her that that dream never came true. She entertained my conversation for a few moments and introduced me to her family standing near by. Another highlight in my life!

Well, my focus for this event was Shannon Sharpe and Deion Sanders. It was a blast having the access I had and being around all my childhood heroes! Below are just a few of my favorites from the night. It ended with Nelly and Snoop Dogg performing at a private party for Deion and Marshall Faulk. What a night!!!

2011 ESPYS

For the past few years I've been fortunate enough to shoot the ESPYS preparties in L.A. This year was a little extra bonus as I got to shoot the red carpet/award room for the actual event. It was a great week! I love this event because I've had the opportunity to see some of the same people over and over and build some really cool relationships. One of my favorite moments was a conversation in a club with LeAnn Rimes...
LeAnn: "Have we met before?"
Me: "I don't believe so."
LeAnn: "Are you sure? Cause you look really familiar."
Me: "Yeah, I'm pretty sure."
LeAnn: "Well, I guess you just have one of those familiar faces."

If she wasn't standing next to her new beau, Eddie Cibrian, I'd think she was hitting on me! (ok, not really) Anyway, both she and Eddie were very kind and allowed me to take a shot of them (see below) even though they've been keeping private lately.

Wow, so this one is long overdue! Before the ESPYS my summer kicked off at a beautiful wedding at Carmel's Coxhall Gardens with the reception downtown at the Conrad. On a day filled with dark clouds and visible rain a few blocks away, it all held off till the end as we headed to the reception. The timing was perfect. The wedding was beautiful. The images are stunning. Thanks Courtney and Cory for allowing me to be a part of such an important memory for the two of you!

2011 INDY 500 :: Celebrity Event Photographer

Born and raised in Indiana, I never cared much for racing; football has always been my passion. However two years ago, my racing world changed. I've been fortunate enough to have spent the past few years shooting the Indy 500 weekend celebrations organized by event guru Jen Beaver. This past year was a celebration of many things, not only was it the 100th anniversary of the race, but it was also the kickoff of the Indy Car and Facebook joining together with the MiCar allowing Facebook users like YOU to become an "owner" and have your profile picture on a car for the whole racing season. Whether you're a race fan or not, you gotta check it out.

What I love about the Indy 500 now is that I get incredible access to the cars, drivers, celebrities, REAL fans, and of course - amazing food (such as the yummy deliciousness at Sensu downtown)! The weekend kicked off with a party at Sensu and the talented DJ Irie in from Miami. The MiCar was introduced and people were tweeting about it like crazy! Saturday we took a few laps around the track in a pace car and then rested up for the big day Sunday. Sunday we hung out on the track before the race took off and I got "stuck" against the wall as the cars took off for their first lap. I've posted the video on my Facebook. It was... as some would say... EPIC! We spent the rest of the race in a couple pits and then up on the top of the Pagoda, literally!

I could go on and on about the whole weekend and how amazing everyone was, but I need to stop somewhere, so I'll let the pics below speak for themselves. If you want to see all the pics, hit me up on Facebook! If you want to hear some crazy stories, buy me coffee!

WOW!!! God + Rock Concert + Photography = AMAZING NIGHT!

Last night I was fortunate enough to take some pics of the concert for Northview Christian Church in Carmel, IN. I can officially say I've attended my favorite concert ever! Even better - it was in a church! Up and coming artist, Trevor Morgan, started the show with a few songs before Tenth Avenue North came on stage. I love their lyrics and find them so applicable to my life. People worshiping and great music got the night off to a terrific start. Then, Third Day came on stage...

I've been to other Christian concerts before, but Third Day left me speechless! They really do know how to ROCK and put on an AMAZING performance. Trying to get some sweet shots was effortless thanks to lighting job by their stage crew and designers.

What a way to end 2010 and a GREAT year for my photography business! (More about my year in my next post.) I celebrated my 2011 New Years in style - with an AMAZING wedding!!! Abby and Nathan (aka Neil Diamond - check out the pics for evidence) provided nothing short of a STUNNING night! A gorgeous couple, beautiful ceremony, highly entertaining reception, and iconic image rocking in the new year, made this celebration one for the record books! NFL: VIKINGS vs. PACKERS (11-21-10)

In the NFL, you never know when a game might be your last. I went into the game thinking this could easily be the case for Brett Favre. All it takes - is one hit. One helmet to helmet. One bad game. Turns out, it was the last game.. for Brad Childress as coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

I was blessed with the opportunity to get up close and personal with players at practice the day before, and almost smashed during the game as James Jones scores a touchdown. It was a fun game to capture, although I was pulling for Favre and the Vikings against the Packers on behalf of my Chicago Bears!

I had a blast shooting the game, and as you can tell, a lot of my focus was on Brett Favre and trying to capture a shot for my office space. Now I can't decide which one to use! Check out some of my favorites below and watch the slideshow for more!

2010 REGGIE WAYNE'S WISHING ON STARS

This was my second year in a row that I've been fortunate enough to be a part of Reggie Wayne's Wishing on Stars event. Each year, I have been AMAZED by the generosity of those that come out to support such a worthy cause, as well as the athletes and local celebrities that take the time to be a part of something bigger. I must admit that I'm extremely impressed with Reggie! In a nutshell, the night consists of players from both the Colts & Pacers and local celebrities walking around auctioning off some very entertaining moments. Whether it's a LARGE donation for a simple autograph, or phone call to a friend/family member, or - my favorite - last year's Roy Hibbert singing "This Little Light of Mine", the night is filled with energy, laughter, and awe as people so generously donate to support the United Way of Central Indiana.

Okay, so what impresses me about Reggie is the way he makes everyone feel like a personal friend. I've had the opportunity to meet some pretty well known athletes and celebrities from different events I've shot, and only a few of them display the sincerity like Reggie Wayne. While others from the event slowly make their way to the Monday Night Football game on at the bar, Reggie is walking around to each and every attendee taking the time for a quick autograph or snapshot long after the event has ended. A great cause AND a great guy! (This coming from a Bears fan!)

The Longs :: Indianapolis Portrait Photographer

Last April I donated a photo shoot to be auctioned off for a wonderful event, Indianapolis' first Coaches' Huddle. Chaired by Butler University Men's Basketball Head Coach Brad Stevens, it was a VIP reception with auctions, cocktails, food, and dancing. Proceeds from the event supported the Coaches' vs. Cancer program, a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers coaches, their teams and communities to join the fight against cancer. Okay, I admit it… I’m already listening to Christmas music on Pandora – but only when my wife isn’t around. She thinks it should be outlawed to listen to it before Thanksgiving. I just say every day is a day to be thankful for!

On that note, I’m thankful to the great people who helped design my Christmas cards for 2010. Sophie is ONE!!!

Sophie is one of my first "Growing Year Package" kids (meaning three shoots over the period of a year), since I just started offering it a year ago! I love getting to watch them grow. I especially enjoy getting to know the families more, and it keeps me accountable to taking more pics of my own children when I sit down to edit them and reflect on their changes. Sophie brings such joy, tender smiles, and the kind of presence that easily encourages this family to add more children to their home. Congratulations Sophie, on being a big sister; looking forward to another year with you and Baby Schlueter!

The bell rang. School was over. She went home. It was a Friday night, when suddenly, the bell rang again. This time it was her doorbell! When she answered... it was... her TEACHER!!! Only this time, it wasn't to tutor. In place of a ruler and chalk, her teacher held in his hands... a CAMERA!

Okay, so it wasn't as dramatic as that, but it did happen. You can't tell by her smile, but it really was quite painless for her. =) The Nelsons are a BEAUTIFUL family, as you can tell by the adorable pictures below. One of my favorite things about shooting families is being able to watch them grow over the years. Recently, I shot the Johns family and they are definitely one of the longest growing friendships I've had. The terrific mom and I were in high school together five years ago... okay, ten... okay, so maybe a little more. That's not my point though! My point is that it is so good to reunite with friends and see how life has blessed them.

Jess & Ricky :: Indianapolis Wedding Photography

I love when I have a wedding and I think to myself "Self, Wow! That was beautiful!" and then the next weekend I have another wedding and I think to myself "Self, Wow! That was beautiful!" There's something about the celebration of a wedding that is beautiful and unique with each different couple that I find irresistible. Okay, so I'm a softy. I love love.

Anyway, I met Jess and Ricky a few months back for a quick coffee. Two hours later or so, while we were still talking, I realized a couple things: 1) that wasn't a 'quick' coffee and 2) these two were fun to hang out with. If I recall, Ricky even said "Do you always get along with couples so well?" =)

Jumping ahead to last weekend, the fun continued as their day approached. Granted it was sunny and hot out, these two made for some great photos that I know they will cherish forever. Check out some of my favorite pics below and then watch the slideshow for more!

2011 Senior: Kamryn

Every year around this time I get a glimpse of the future. It usually comes in a 17 or 18 year old package. A glimpse of excitement of the unknown. A glimpse of fearlessness or invincibility.

This time, it was from Kamryn - a senior in Munster, Indiana. Unaware of what she's going to do or where she's going to go (my vote is for Notre Dame), one thing she's sure of is that golf will definitely follow her closely. When she recently shot a 71, I chuckled at that number cause I too have shot a 71. The difference... mine was on 9 holes her's was 18! =p

Anyway, we had a blast shooting some pics in Chicago and a few more at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, In. We got some fun shots below and in the slideshow as well, so be sure to check it out!

Katie & Drew's Wedding : TMNT Style

Okay, I have to admit... I had way too much fun playing with these photos! I had the honor of shooting the beautiful wedding of Katie and Drew. Drew is the brother of a previous bride and is also the famous "flower sniffer" on my website. You'll have to hunt the picture down! It's worth it!

Well, this past weekend was their big day and they were all more than willing to ham it up for me. If you look closely, you do see an intentional resemblance in coloring on the guys that might cause you to think of Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, & Raphael -- no, not the old dead dudes from history -- rather the one and only turtles in a half shell -- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! That, of course, totally explains the mad hops on the guys in the second picture below. Needless to say, we tend to have a little fun on my shoots!

Jack Johnson

Jack Johnson. I wouldn't call it an obsession with him, rather a desire for the simplicity of life in his songs. Jack and I would be BFF's if we had the chance to meet, which almost happened at the concert this past week. Before the show, Jack Johnson, G. Love, and Zach Gill performed on a small side stage giving me pretty good "seats". Check out the video I posted from it.

I've seen him each time he has been in Indy and one of these days I'm going to figure out how to get a press pass because it is nearly painful to listen and not be thinking about which lens or angle I would use for a shot I have in mind with this lighting. So, I did what I could with my point and shoot, and putting aside what I know I could have done with my SLR (aka - my big camera), I do love the moment and imagery of the artist with the manipulated screen shot. Check out the pics below!

2010 ESPY'S

Wow! What a week! I just got back from a week in California which was kicked off with the annual ESPY'S Pre-Party in L.A. This party was packed with celebrities and athletes including Kim Kardashian w/ new "friend" Miles Austin, Apolo Ohno, Jose Canseco, Joaquin Phoenix, Craig Robinson, and many others. The guest host for the night was Jamie Foxx with NFL guest DJ Eddie George and a live performance by the band LMFAO. The party was crazy! Check out the slideshow below to see some of the pics!

I also shot some pics on the red carpet in Hollywood for ESPN's official party. Here are a few pics below, but check out my facebook for more from the night!

My trip ended snapping a few pics of the AVP tournament taking place down the street from me in Hermosa Beach. A few pics are below, but watch it this weekend on tv.

Adrienne & John :: Indianapolis Wedding Photography

Adrienne and John. One's a nurse. One's a teacher. Both couldn't be more perfect for each other. What you will observe in these pictures is a couple who are uniquely and obviously designed for one another. There are these great pieces of personality that come out when you are with them, such as John’s ability to appropriately pull out the perfect movie quote and fittingly make Adrienne’s smile that much more sincere as she delights in him. I love how she too can pull off fun fashion like the bird cage veil! They have this great look and feel that puts people around them at ease and seems to draw one another deeper into each other – while having a blast doing it! Congratulations to you both!

North Carolina: Montreat College Golf Outing

I just finished an amazing day golfing in North Carolina at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove - a Jack Nicklaus golf course. It was a fundraiser for Montreat College, a local Christian Liberal-Arts College located in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I was fortunate enough to meet former PGA golfer, DeWitt Weaver. He entertained everyone by explaining how some of the best golfers in history tee off and drive. It's amazing how perfectly DeWitt Weaver can mimic their every move and drive.

My thanks goes out to Montreat College, The Cliffs at Walnut Cove, and DeWitt Weaver for an amazingly beautiful day... even if it did rain!

I'm back from Santa Barbara and quite possibly one of the most beautiful weddings I've ever seen! Granted, these two people are beautiful on the outside, but it's what's inside that stole the show. These two have been blessed to be raised in homes that know and love the Lord intimately. This awareness of God's forgiveness and love is evident through the love they share with each other.

Listening to Skye's three sisters talk about the days they dreamed of who Skye would marry so they could have a fourth sister, and then watching them cry as they shared their excitement and love for Kasey, as well as Skye... All this taking place at a home opened up for Kasey's and Skye's family and friends while the owners aren't even in town... Not to mention the different countries (and states) that people traveled from just to be a part of this day for them.

The day was beautiful and I have thousands, literally, of amazing pics to go through. While I finish those up, here are a few of my favorites to hold you over till the slideshow. Be sure to check back soon!

The FOX 59 Dream Wedding was only made possible by the passion and dedication of many people involved in this production, and trust me, it was a production! First, kudos to FOX 59 for making this all happen and thanks for allowing ME to be a part of it! The day went smoothly thanks to the structure and patience of Crista Tharp, wedding planner extraordinaire. The Ritz Charles, in Carmel, is a beautiful place and I love the simplicity of the Chapel they have right in front of their glassed Garden Pavilion. A Classic Party Rentals had everything looking sharp. J.P. Parker Flowers had some beautiful arrangements and her bouquet helped create one of my new favorite shots! Zsarenet's beautiful dress was provided by Sophia's, as well as Ja'Rell's tux, but it was 'Butter' (their son) that stole the show in his mini-tux! Salon 01 gave Zsarenet the finishing touches with her hair and makeup. And of course... the ring... provided by Moyer Fine Jewelers in Indianapolis. The pictures speak for the ring itself!

So it was obvious in the engagement shots how relaxed and fun Zsarenet and Ja’Rell are, but my expectations were not the same for a wedding live on television. As you can see here, they were unshaken by the cameras and interviews. It was clear that despite the additional pressures of this wedding day that they are in love and ready to start this new, exciting phase in their relationship. What a unique experience to work around the true production of a wedding yet to really be able to see their focus on one another!

What a blast! Spend an afternoon with Zsarenet & Ja’Rell and it is easy to see why this couple is deserving of a FOX Wedding Giveaway. Engagement shoots are great because I get to know the couple without all the nerves of a wedding, for example, Ja’Rell’s nickname is “Peanut” so of course, little Ja’Rell is “Butter”. Butter easily steals the picture and has a great connection with each of his parents (obvious in his delight while being tossed high enough to rival the skyline). I look forward to capturing the day of a couple so overtly in love, committed, and excited to celebrate their lives together. Stay tuned to see Butter debut his first tux!

CELEBRATING LIFE!

What a Spring! These past few weeks have been filled with the celebration of life as I’ve been busy capturing different stages of a few babies’ first year. A shout out goes to the parents of these little dolls and one new father’s white shirt that was christened! (Hope the stain came out.) =)

I’m most excited about the opportunity I have to watch and capture these adorable kids as they grow. Besides my Asa having me photographing him as he grows for the rest of his life whether he likes it or not, THREE of them are involved in my “Growing Year Package” that’ll allow me to capture different stages of their first year of life. It’ll be fun to see how they’ve grown and changed by the time they turn one. Here are just a few of my favorites from each shoot. Enjoy!

In the spirit of Valentine’s day and the awesome work that I get to do with loving couples and doting parents, I thought it quite fitting to post a few questions to encourage reconnecting this holiday (or at any time)!

A few of the qualities I most enjoy in Rebecca that I look forward to seeing develop even more in my own kids is her awareness of others' needs & the ability to remember a name and face from one meeting and remembering all the details about that person while blowing them away with those exact details the next time their paths cross - even if it's ten years later! In other words -- she truly cares!

2010 PRO BOWL PRACTICES

The past few days of being on the field as the AFC and NFC Pro Bowl teams have practiced has been both inspirational and entertaining. I've enjoyed overhearing the interviews with many of the players and am inspired by the amount of athletes giving credit to God and sharing their favorite bible verses, as did Aaron Rogers. I've also enjoyed many laughs from the comical Donovan McNabb and the atmosphere of the practices, as seen on many of players faces as they're goofing around and just enjoying the moments. I was fortunate enough to be able to capture the event that took place at the RISE ACADEMY School of Science & Technology. I've taken some amazing photos of some of the most beautiful people in the world, but none of them compare to the beauty captured in the photos of this family below. This family has been blessed by God in many ways with another bundle of life expected to enter this world around the end of March. The affection the kids in this family have for their Mama and baby can not only be seen in the images, but can be heard through the stories and prayers they pray upon their arriving sibling. From the belly kisses to the slobbery zerberts, this child needs to be prepared to be showered with love. The number one reason why this family is so precious to me... is because it's mine!

What a way to wrap up shoots for 2009! I’ve been blessed to have known these boys since their birth, thanks to a great friendship with their parents. This gives me the unique joy of fully appreciating how much they have changed (in real life and from previous shoots). Now it may not be obvious to most, but I loved seeing their personalities in these pics. The shots where younger stands over and leans into older doesn’t surprise me in the way these two will certainly keep one another sharp. The sideways expression and occasional tiptoe shots are a classic look for older. The unprompted poses and facials of younger express a distinct independence. They are a blessing in our lives and obviously easy to photograph—nice work Mom and Dad (not to mention the unparalleled look of handmade sweaters by Mimi K)!

Watch, and I’m sure you will agree that there is great appeal in seeing celebrities laughing, entertaining, and generating money for kids with special wishes!

Alig Family Portrait :: Indianapolis Portrait Photographer

So I have officially been doing my photography business for two years, and I have been able to do three photoshoots of the Alig family! Not only are they good friends (and good for my ego when I go to their house and it looks like the Brian McGuckin Photo-Gallery), but it is so exciting to see them grow from behind the lens as well. Their comfort and playfulness for the camera shows and makes my job easy. It also makes me remember how important relationships are in this line of work as not only does it make for better pictures, but it generates an excitement for returning to do another shoot at the next milestone. Everyone knows the type of girl who is truly modest and most likely prefers looking at pictures of others rather than herself because she has never really liked her own pics (but honestly everyone else can see how cute she is). That's Alex--a little uncertain about the whole entire shoot being about her. Looking at these shots you can not only see that she has nothing to be shy about, but also a variety of looks that all look good! (Not everyone can pull off a hooded sweatshirt and a black dress and make both look completely blog-worthy :)

I'm just glad she didn't put on her Cardinals baseball cap, or else I'd be doing a little touch-up job in Photoshop. Go CUBS!

I've shot pictures on stage with Ludacris (Rapper/Actor) and on stage with the Ballas Hough Band (from Dancing w/ the Stars), but nothing compares to the free acoustic concert I got to hear live with Andrew while shooting his senior pictures!

We had a blast both doing what we loved the most -- Andrew played his guitar and I took pictures. This was one of my favorite shoots ever! Not just because of the music, but because six years ago Andrew was a little sixth grader sitting in the back row of my social studies classroom. Over the years I've had the honor of watching him grow up and try to discover who God has made him to be. Our time together during the shoot revealed to me his passion for not just life, but his guitar.

Anyone who follows this blog or reads the "Artist" section on my website, knows I love kids. Anyone who really knows me knows I covet quality family time and may be borderline prideful about the relationships I have with my own children. Having openly admitted this, I must say that it was these same tendencies that made this shoot such a blast. The moments I boast about wanting to capture were easy and natural with the Puthran family. You can’t help but watch them and feel that they have a genuine respect and enjoyment of one another. Just glancing at these shots, you see the kids connecting and delighting in their parents. You get the sense of big brother loving on his little sis and you know it wasn’t for the sake of my camera. I soaked in the beautiful Fall weather this past Saturday with a wedding down in Bloomington, Indiana! Great Weather. Great People. Great Fun!!!

I've had the opportunity to get to know Ashley and Naaman a little over the past few months from gatherings and shooting Ashley's sister's wedding, Erin & Dustin. They are such a sweet couple that know how to have fun and laugh! It's fun to see the family dynamics and to build relationships with them. Not many photographers get a chance to dance with the bride and groom! =)

Robin and Tommy... STUNNING! It was a beautiful day Saturday for a wedding at the Indianapolis Art Center in Broad Ripple. I've been excited about their wedding for a while now because Robin has this great piercing that I couldn't wait to capture in her wedding dress. If you look closely where a necklace would hang, you'll see a gorgeous diamond pierced right into her chest. I knew this would add a special touch to the photos and we got some AMAZING shots!

Everybody in the wedding party and their guests were too kind and I had a BLAST making some new friends. (Cheap plug... if you ever need a sweet sound system, contact Graham at Audio Solutions in Broad Ripple!)

You want the truth? The reason why Robin and Tommy are some of my favorite people in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD is because they both work for CAFE PATACHOU!!! This place is the closest thing to Heaven on Earth. I could live off of two things from there: "blueberry muffins" and "chicken salad on a croissant"! =)

NEW FRIENDS IN LA

California brought many exciting opportunities for me! Besides shooting the ESPY’s Pre-Party and celebrating my second anniversary of the birthing of my business with friends Deyl and DJ, I was fortunate enough to have a great hostess for the week, Mary Lynn Rajskub. Also known as Chloe on the hit tv series 24, she and her new husband Matt Rolph are blessed to be the parents of an adorable little boy, Val (Valentine). I’m extremely grateful for their hospitality and enjoyed the laughs from some of Mary Lynn’s comments. If you’ve never seen her on 24 or had the opportunity to see any of her interviews, check out any of her YouTube clips. She’s stinking hilarious! We also took some time out to get some family photos for her and US Magazine. Here’s a sweet photo of them below. Can’t wait to see them again!

Deyl & DJ in Santa Barbara

While in LA for the ESPY’s Pre-Party, I also celebrated the two year anniversary of the birthing of my photography business with my friends Deyl Kearin and David Jay! It was two years ago when I came to Santa Barbara after reading The Four Hour Work Week to brainstorm ideas with Deyl, a great “out of the box” thinker. He introduced me to his best friend DJ (David Jay), a heck of an entrepreneur and not a bad photographer, who let me ask every question possible about photography and shoot with him at a wedding in Chicago on my way back home at the end of the week. This newly gained wisdom and hands-on experience with DJ sparked the beginning of my official business. To celebrate this anniversary, I spent some time in Santa Barbara and went out to eat with them for some great Indian food! I’m thankful to them for continuing to encourage my vision and even more excited seeing first hand how their visions are being lived out.

Deyl is at an exciting stage of life as he has recently witnessed a true miracle in the birth of his daughter, his first child. It was fun to have a good laugh thinking back on those days seven years ago for me! (Deep thought…Wow! My daughter is 7! Man, I’m old!) DJ has some sweet stuff going on with his “ShowIt” business and the programs he designed to help photographers. Check out his stuff and even get a free website that is above and beyond anything else out there available. What’s great is that more than photographers are using it to promote their business.

ESPY's Pre-Party

As I mentioned in my recent post, I was out of town for three weeks traveling in California for some shoots and Colorado for a family vacation and some business meetings. In California, I had the privilege to reconnect with my great friend Jen Beaver of All Access Promotions and shoot a pre-party for the ESPY’s in LA. As usual, she put on a great event and I was glad to reconnect with some of my friends from the INDY 500 event this past year. Mark Ballas and Derek Hough, from Dancing With The Stars and the Ballas Hough Band, are great guys that have given me some generous props since the INDY 500. Joanna Pacitti, Mark Ballas’ girlfriend and American Idol star, is another whom I’m thankful for her kind words.

In addition to meeting Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson and Tony Gonzalez (always a big help on my fantasy football team), I enjoyed having the opportunity to talk with NFL Hall of Famer, Warren Moon. Warren is one of the main hosts of the ESPY’s Pre-Party event every year. I continue to enjoy having the opportunity to work with athletes and celebrities and see how sincere and real many of them are when they are not surrounded by fans.

Where Have I Been?

WOW! I'm finishing up a three week sabbatical from Indiana AND the internet (not by choice for the latter though). While traveling between California and Colorado, I did stop back in Indiana for two days to shoot two weddings. Here's a slideshow of Claire and Tyler's wedding at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. Tyler was very intentional in a few special plans for Claire and the guests. Let's just say... I've never seen a garter look so good on a man's leg! Check out the show below!

Erin and Dustin have a very special place in my heart! Erin, because she worked at Cafe Patachou (love that place so much I even went there today to work on their slideshow!) and Dustin, because he's a Chicago Bears fan!!! Those two things right there automatically make them some of my favorite people in the world! (Far, far from my wife of course! Are you reading this honey?) Now, if I can just convince Dustin to invite me over to watch a Bears game and have Erin bringing me a yummy Chicken Salad on Croissant...

Brittany and Michael's Slideshow

This past month I've had the pleasure of shooting the weddings of two brothers, John and Michael Hart. This is what I love about photography... RELATIONSHIPS! Having the opportunity to be a part of such a special day for a family, not just once, but TWICE has allowed me to truly get to know the Hart family and be more than just their "photographer". To me, photography isn't just showing up and taking a few pictures and then moving on. It's getting to know them. Building a relationship.

The more comfortable a couple can be with me the more inconspicuous I am able to be during the many personal moments and the more we are able to enjoy the formal shots with family, which I believe was especially evident in both weddings. Brittany and Michael's wedding gave me a great excuse to visit with Johnny and Falan... still in their honeymoon period!

It feels like forever ago that I met Brittany and Michael and we shot their engagement pictures. And now the wedding is already over! At least I've got these great memories below to allow me to reflect back on the day too. Click below and enjoy the slideshow!

POST-FATHER'S DAY PHOTO CONTEST!

One of my deepest disappointments has come from one of my greatest joys. The birth of my third child, A.J., marked a painful first. My own father would never know him. This matters more to me because of the father he was, and the grandfather my children will never have. Jack McGuckin most notably shaped me through not just a personal invested interest in my passions (i.e. my football games and proudly sporting my pic -- even with a mullet -- on a button) but more consistently through something that is still lacking in father-son relationships. He never wavered in showing me affection. The consistent hugs and “I love you”s have made for my family a legacy greater than that of the largest trust fund. My boys are still young, yet I know that they too may someday miss the great hugs (ie. tackles) we greet one another with, as I know I will continue to insist upon them through what tends to be the more awkward teen years and well-past into my visits with their own families.

As I still have to remind myself he is actually gone from the earth every time this holiday unexpectedly arrives, I hang onto the hope that I have that one day not only will I embrace him again in heaven, but I too will have the joy of seeing him do the same in greeting my children, and the one he never met, A.J.

If I could have one moment captured today in a picture with him, it would be this great embrace. In honor of my father, I want to extend a chance for you to choose something so precious to hold onto as well, be it with a dad, husband, or grandfather. Here is what you do…

Father/Daughter Getaway!

This past weekend my daughter and I went away on our annual father/daughter getaway with a bunch of other dads and daughters. We love this time cause it allows us to get away from the craziness of our lives and the many distractions that keep us from enjoying each other's love! I miss my little baby girl who has grown up TOOO fast before my eyes. I've always been intentional with my time with my children and these little getaways are always a special bonus! Here's a slideshow of our time with the other dads/daughters/(all the frogs that stole our daughters' attention from us!!!). So, if you are into pop culture then you probably recognize Ludacris (rap artist on the left)and Carlos Diaz (Extra host on the right), but if you are really lucky then you know the woman in the middle—Jen Beaver. Like Ludacris kept announcing at The Race Party, “I’m here because Jen Beaver brought me here;” I too was there because she brought me. Jen, an Event Planner, worked in the most tireless manner to orchestrate three major events that comprised THE Race Party and additional gatherings surrounding a movie premier and the Indy 500. Little sleep, even less food, keeping celebrities at the right place at the right time, and making everything appear seamless are just a few of the job qualifications that make Jen amazing. The more important personal ones are her dedication, sincerity, approachability, kindness, and ability to not be “starstruck”. No matter what profession you are in, when you have someone who believes in your ability, encourages you endlessly, sacrifices their own time to direct you, gives you rare opportunities, and exists outside of the small circle of people who would seem required to do all of the above (i.e. your mom); it is an awesome boost to your belief in yourself and quite worthy of the time to say THANK YOU! Are you fortunate enough to have your own “Jen Beaver” to recognize; if so, I would encourage you to acknowledge them today!

Falan and Johnny Slideshow

It's finally here! Falan and Johnny had a beautiful intimate wedding up in Culver, Indiana and the day was meant for them! Dark clouds, rain, and wind threatened the morning until the sun took over and made it one of the most beautiful days of the year!

I admit it! I get choked up at weddings! Sometimes it's the thought of my wife, sometimes it's the thought of my daughter (when she's 40 of course), but most of the time it is because I've had an opportunity to truly get to know the couple and I feel a connection to them. After all, it's hard not to. You spend the most intimate moments with the couple individually, together, and with their family and friends on what is often THE most important day of their lives so far. It's hard not to feel like you are a part of it all. Falan and Johnny were no exception!

40 X 40 - 3 Down 37 To Go!!!

So, the MiniMarathon is finally over and I'm officially 3 races closer to my goal of 40 races by the time I turn 40, which IS still far away - thank you very much! If all of my training runs would have been races, I'd be at my goal by now. (I'm trying not to be bitter that my 12 mile runs, 10 mile runs, 8 mile runs, etc. counted for nothing towards my goal.) More importantly though, I've learned to actually enjoy running and now find myself itching to get out there.

My race times weren't the best, but I achieved one of my goals by finishing the race without walking; thanks to my friends cheering me on the last 1/2 mile! I officially count this race as the biggest physical athletic achievement in my life... I wonder what will come next?

April is Donate Life Month!!!

This is a special month for me personally in many ways. Besides my own birthday and my daughter's birthday (amongst other family members' birthdays), April represents my dad's birthday for a second life. Seven years ago, my family received the most important gift ever in our lives... a new liver for my dad! After the pain of watching my dad suffer both physically and mentally, the loss of one family's loved one became a new life to our family.

Although my dad is no longer with us on Earth, I am forever grateful to the donor and their family for the four best years of his life and the blessing that it has been for me. To this day, the donor has been anonymous to me and my family. It is because of donors like ours, that I am able to have memories to last a lifetime and pass on to my children. It is because of others out there, like YOU, that other families can be blessed with a gift that could literally change their lives forever.

National Donate Life Month was established in 2003. Every day in April, people across the U.S. make a special effort to celebrate the tremendous generosity of those who have saved lives by becoming organ, tissue, marrow, and blood donors and to encourage more Americans to follow their fine example.

8 MILE RUN!!!

I just finished my NEW official longest run ever... 8 MILES! It's amazing how your body can just keep going and going and the impact that your mind can have. I've been listening to a group called Dispatch, an American indie/roots folk jam band, while I run. Music plays a big part in my life and helps me to get through the run with a little less pain. I've always found my life to be one big musical. I'm not sure what I'd name it though. I just always have a song in my head and my emotions are so easily changed by the tunes. With tonight's run, I kept repeating over and over Philippians 4:13 "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me." So true... So true!

Here's a snapshot of the runkeeper I use with my iPhone to track my run. Again, not the fastest time, but baby-steps! =)

Caribbean Wedding Slideshows

A week ago today, I left for one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to... St. John U.S. Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Just east of St. Thomas, it is a rugged island with 3/4ths of it preserved as a National Park. The clear blue water, beautiful sunset beaches, and rustic sugar mill ruins scattered throughout make it a utopia for photographers! Take a few minutes and check out a few slideshows below!

Seriously! I get paid to take BEAUTIFUL pictures (which I love) of BEAUTIFUL people (which I love) in BEAUTIFUL places (which I love)! Does it get any better than this?

Here's a sneak peak of a wedding I shot this past weekend in St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. All the family and friends were a blast to hang out with and I hope to see them again soon! We took a catamaran out to do some snorkeling the day before and then talked the hot couple into getting dressed the day after to go to some of the sugar mill ruins on the island. It truly was an amazing trip that I cannot put into words. Hopefully the pictures can do some justice. Stay tuned for a few little slideshows of the three events!

As I train for my first mini-marathon, I've been trying to keep track of my miles and times along the way. I have this app on my iPhone call RunKeeper; it uses GPS to track my fitness and then saves it on their site. When I log in to see the stats for a run, this is what I see. It's fun cause I can drag the mouse along the bottom graph and watch the little blue dot move on the map to show where I was at that speed and elevation.

The past two weeks I've been running 5 miles on my "long" runs, which ties the furthest I've ever ran consecutively. Sadly, it was when I was in middle school running a Popcorn Panic up in Valparaiso where I grew up. Well, today I shattered that record with a whopping 6.2 miles! (Baby steps... Baby steps...) My goal was just to finish the 6 miles and I had a great game plan. I ran the first half as far away from my home so that way I had no choice but to finish the 6 miles on the way back. The best thing about it was that I felt that I could have ran another 2-4 miles. I figured I better be safe and just achieve my goal (which I actually exceeded by .20 miles, thank you very much!!!) =)

My training schedule has me running 7 & 8 miles in the next few weeks, so I look forward to scoring some new personal highs. Hopefully I make it back to post about it! =)

Guys Weekend

This past weekend, I got to get away from the craziness of life and go camp in the woods near Brown County, Indiana. This was my second year partaking in this long tradition. This tradition started in 1969 and has continued through rain and snow ever since. Originally intended for a group of "boys" to get out and shoot muzzleloaders, it's transformed over the years to today's events of tapping syrup trees and throwing tomahawks. These guys know how to live it up right... bacon wrapped shrimp, grilled tuna, cold beverages (to keep us warm)! Of course it's not that easy. Lot's of wood chopping and sleeping out in a lean-to in 18 degree weather. The pictures can give you a glimpse of it all. The snow fell the second morning, hence the reason we're all gathered around the multiple fires. The weekend ends with pancakes and freshly made syrup! Be sure to check out the slideshow below!

40 X 40 - 2 Down 38 To Go!!!

A handful of months ago, I posted about a goal I made to compete in 40 races by the time I turn 40. Fortunately, I still have just under 7 years to complete it. This past weekend, I came one step closer!!! Crazy me signed up for the mini-marathon, here in Indy, for my first time. I've heard it's a little bit further than my previous longest race of 5 miles in 7th grade! To be prepared, I also signed up for a training team (I even caught myself training for the training).

This past weekend was race #2, a 5K that is part of the training series. As you can tell by my time below, I still have a ways to go. Baby steps! Baby steps!

P.S. If you're that walker that passed me... vengeance will be mine! (If I can catch you!)
